Abstract

[Extract] Identity gives us an idea of who we are and how we relate to others who share a particular position and to those who are different. National identities are contested and struggles are represented by conflicting reflections on society and history. Identities are constructed on the recognition of common origins, shared characteristics with another person or group and the natural formation of solidarity and allegiance.
