Abstract

The increasing incidence of injury to the triceps surae muscle in high performance front row rugby union players has stimulated a need to investigate the events surrounding this injury. Previous research has linked TS muscle injuries with both scrummaging and activities which mimic those of scrummaging, but the possible mechanisms of injury remain unidentified. In addition, limited published data exists, that has reported the biomechanics of scrummaging techniques of high performance players. Of these studies the majority have been undertaken using scrummaging machines, with research on the biomechanics of live scrummaging less well documented. Accordingly, the purpose of this two part study was firstly to conduct an observational video analysis of TS injuries in a group of high performance front row players, and subsequently investigate the lower limb kinematics of a second cohort of high performance players during a series of live scrummaging drills. It was hypothesised that using mixed method analysis would provide a greater depth of understanding about the possible causes and mechanisms for TS injury.
