Abstract

[Extract] This book forms a discussion by the author of the common problems involved in accommodating pluralistic industrial relations to the imperatives of economic and social development in ten Southern Asian countries. It is a normative and mildly prescriptive book, the suggestions deriving from the author's ILO responsibilties in Southern Asia and from his experiences of the thinking, worries and hopes of the people-government ministers, trade unionists, employers, and academicians-who shape labour relations there. Thus, Schregle claims no scholarly originality but instead aims "... to encapsulate a trend of thought and a debate that are current in Southern Asia at present and to attempt to systematise them and to extract from them the main factors which do at the moment, and are likely in the future, to influence thought and practice in the field of labour relations in the countries concerned."
