Abstract

From the investigation of the relationships between Guangxi ethnic groups and the Han-Chinese during the Ming Dynasty using linguistic materials and historical literature, specifically the Zhuang, Kam, Maonan and Mak nomenclature of the Han-Chinese and other related matters, this paper argues that, despite its positive impact on the development of the economy and culture in Guangxi, the weisuo (military colonies) system during the Ming dynasty is characterized by its prominent military features in regard of their relationship with the native ethnic groups.
