Abstract
[Extract] You would think students would be used to pulling allnighters, but James Cook University’s vets-in-the-making are experiencing a rude shock during their Year 5 rotations, when they have to work night shifts at the university’s new vet hospital. “I was the anaesthetist during an emergency caesarean one night when the patient started vomiting mid-way through,” said Mary-Lou Doolan, who was one of the first students to work a night shift. “If I wasn’t awake before, I certainly was then.” As well as fighting drooping eyelids, another main difference between normal daily practice and emergency care are the clients.
