Abstract

Australian sugar mills are required to collect information about cane supplied to the mill from each block in the sugar district to ensure growers are correctly paid for cane produced. One of these mills, Tully Sugar Ltd, has stored this information in a retrieval system that permitted the retrospective analysis of cane yield (TCH) and commercial cane sugar (CCS) from 1988 to 1998. Another database of small mill CCS for sizeable number of blocks was also available and trends were derived to compare with trends in factory CCS. the key factors that influenced cane yield were identified from the block data and characterized. TCH was heavily influenced by the time that the crop harvested in the previous season and the farm from which it originated. Factory CCS declined, but small mill CCS remained stable over the 10-year period.
