Abstract

Student behaviour and teacher health and wellbeing have obvious and documented correlations. The purpose of this review is to generate discussion around the interconnectedness of teacher/student relationships, behaviour and wellness. The focus, however, is not so much on the binary of ‘cause and effect’ but rather how both teachers and students share similar health biographies. This refers to their human biological disposition and mutual vulnerabilities when responding to biopsychosociological and environmental stressors. This shared bio-physicality suggests that there should also be common ground where strategies to manage stress related behaviours will overlap.

The second poster, The 7 Natural Physicians Managing my Emotions, provides practical prompts for healthcare practices that may potentially diffuse the negative impacts of stress and emotional conflicts in the classroom. The questions that may well be best asked are:

1. What are the correlations between student behaviour and their biophysical states?

2. Why is it important for teachers to help students make the link between biophysical states and behaviour?

3. How can understanding shared teacher/student vulnerabilities in healthcare improve teacher/student relationships and pedagogical practice?

Anecdotal accounts from a current case study in North Queensland involving two Year 6 classes who have been immersed in the 7 Natural Physician’s program have highlighted teacher observations and student recounts of experiences of de-stigmatisation and personal empowerment.
