Abstract

Ban Non Wat is a village in the valley of the Huai Yai, a tributary of the Lam Prasat, which in turn flows into the Mun River. It is located at latitude 15°.16.02' and longitude 102°.16.35'. Air photographs employed during the site surveys of the region in 1999-2000 revealed it to be one of the moated settlements that comprise such a central feature of the prehistoric settlement of the Mun Valley. As part of the Origins of Angkor research programme, the excavation of Ban Non Wat took place over seven seasons, between- the 8th January 2002 and the 1st December 2007. A total of 906 m² were uncovered in three different parts of the site. The main square (A) was located near the centre of the mound. Square Y was opened to the northeast and square X to the south east. Approximately 3,000 m³ of cultural material were removed during the course of the excavation programme.
