Abstract

After he arrived from England in 1863, aged eighteen, Ernest Favenc's adventures in Australia took the classic forms of jackerooing, droving, exploring, and prospecting. These provided the subject matter for writing, and between 1871 and his death in 1908 Favenc published nine serials and nearly 100 short stories in Queensland and New South Wales newspapers, as well as poems, novels for children, and a centennial History of Australian Exploration (1888). Stories printed in the Sydney Bulletin in the 1890s, some of which Favenc re-edited for volume publication, earned him a place in Australian literary history.
